If Winter Comes tells the story of LUKE, a young, gay, black man recently diagnosed with HIV in the 1990s who drives to Vermont to see for one last time his college lover, CHAD, now a committed, fundamentalist Christian with a wife and child.
These are songs, arias, musical scenes and song cycles which have inspired the characters and themes of If Winter Comes.
- “When I am Laid” (Dido’s Lament) is an aria from the opera Dido and Aeneas. It is especially moving as sung by Jessye Norman.
- “An den Mond,” D. 256 (1815). Franz Schubert setting of a poem by Goethe. I have copied the full text here with some of my thoughts and you can view various versions of D 256 on YouTube here.
- Vier letzte Lieder. Strauss’ Four Last Songs is a reflection on Autumn, love and death. No wonder it inspires If Winter Comes!
- Prelude and Liebestod of Tristan und Isolde. I love the Prelude and Liebestod of Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, especially when the Liebestod is sung by Jessye Norman. I also like versions which include the Prelude and a singer on the Liebestod like the one with Kirsten Flagstad.
